Grand Theft Auto IV and Koyaanisqatsi
31 March 07Recently the grand theft auto 4 trailer was released or GTA IV as it is known.
The trailer bears a striking resemblance to an old documentary film Koyaanisqatsi a Hopi word meaning “Life out of Balance”. Many teenagers and young adults from current generations will view this trailer with no clue of its origins.
The creators at RockStar games made a very conscious decision to use music similar to Koyaanisqatsi as well as cinematography. This decision shows the intelligence, creativity, and even true morals behind these artists. The GTA IV trailer shows two things a modern emulation of Koyaanisqatsi and a prelude to a plot, perhaps a life out of balance.
The importance here remains upon the original film and hopefully this brief interlude by GTA IV will serve as a means to re-ignite the lost interest in our world.
Koyaanisqatsi is something we all suffer from now. Ironically as GTA IV has utilized a life out of balance to make their trailer, it is this very technology and consumerism that has driven us further away from balance.
Koyaanisqatsi is a beautiful film that leaves the viewer questioning what they are doing to this planet. This feeling is further compounded with the haunting imagery and music in each movie powasqatsi, and naqoyqatsi. If you have not seen these films then I ask that you please take the time and money to rent or buy them. After watching them your perceptions will forever be changed.

The music is not only similar, it’s exactly the same soundtrack, which was written and composed by Philip Glass. I heartily recommend everyone to see these movies, they are worth every second. It really is a shame that not many people will recognize Koyaanisqatsi in the GTA trailer, I believe they should be digitally remastered and put back in the cinemas. If anything, people will discover a different way of looking in the mirror.
